Moscow, September 10, Interfax - Russian LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) activist Nikolay Alexeyev has applied for Swiss citizenship, he said.
"This by no means is anything to do with political asylum, it is solely to do with my family circumstances," Alexeyev told Interfax.
He added that to a certain extent his decision was affected by "the unfortunate circumstances that are currently taking place in Russia." "It is very saddening for me to see many LGBT activists having left recently and asked for asylum in foreign countries," he said, adding that he was not going to renounce his Russian citizenship and emigrate to Switzerland.
Alexeyev is the founder and organizer of the Moscow gay pride parade. On June 30 he was arrested during an unsanctioned gay pride parade in the center of the capital. On June 1 the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow penalized Alexeyev with 10 days' administrative arrest for disobeying police officers.
