Moscow, June 13, Interfax - Alexey Pushkov, the head of the State Duma committee on international affairs, said he believes same-sex unions will soon become a European value.
"There is a policy to encourage same-sex unions. This issue will now be considered in the UK, where same-sex "marriage" will predictably be legalized, and then it will happen in Germany. When it is legalized in Germany, I think it will de facto become a European value," Pushkov said at a meeting of the State Duma committees on international affairs and family, women and children on Thursday.
Pushkov said progress in that direction is felt in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
"Same-sex unions have not been recognized as a value yet, but they have already been recognized as a right, and the distance from a value to a right is fairly short," he said.
Pushkov recalled that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has recently called on Russia to reverse the law banning gay propaganda among minors.
"If the leaders of Western countries begin to make such calls on us and certain pressure is being exerted on the Russian Federation, it is clear that we are talking about a situation that will become aggravated. In this situation, it seems to me that supporters of same-sex unions will become increasingly active. They not only have the desire to get legal legitimacy, they also want public legitimacy," he said.
