Georgian prime minister promises foreign diplomats to end violence against sexual minorities

Tbilisi, May 27, Interfax - During a meeting with the ambassadors of foreign countries, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili promised them that the Georgian authorities will protect sexual minorities during authorized rallies.

"I convinced the ambassadors that the possibility of such incidents occurring in the future is very low or negligible. Our public are very tolerant of any minorities, but the sexual minority, in comparison with religious and other minorities, is comparatively new to Georgia and many people don't want to accept it," Ivanishvili told reporters after meeting with the foreign ambassadors in Tbilisi, referring to the protest organized by sexual minorities in Tbilisi on May 17, when dozens of members of the gay and lesbian community were hurt.
