Kremlin says disrespect for interests of Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine unacceptable

Moscow, May 18, Interfax - Actions that might cause damage to the interests of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine are unacceptable, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

Reporters mentioned at a meeting with Peskov on Thursday that Ukraine's Verkhovnaya Rada had postponed debates on a bill on status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. In this context, Peskov was asked about the Kremlin's opinion of the document and whether the Kremlin would intervene if the bill was adopted.

"Of course, this is an extremely sensitive issue for the worshippers of the Russian Orthodox Church, and we certainly consider unacceptable any actions that could damage the interests of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine," Peskov said.
