Russia to hold 'Candle of Memory' vigil on eve of war's anniversary

Moscow, June 21, Interfax - Russia and several other countries will conduct the 14th international commemorative rally called the "Candle of Memory" on Tuesday, the event's organizing committee said.

"The Candle of Memory in Russia is not only about grieving, it is also about taking pride in our own people who withstood and won the war despite countless losses. In 2022, the international memorial action The Candle of Memory is timed to coincide with the 81st anniversary since the start of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War," the organizers told journalists on Tuesday.

By the established tradition, the event will begin at 2 p.m. on June 21 at Moscow's Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo, where candles will be lit in memory of all former Soviet republics, hero-cities, Russian cities of military glory, and a special prayer service will be held.

Next, the participants will head to the Poklonnaya Gora area in western Moscow, to the mosque and the synagogue, before visiting the places of memory in the area's Victory Park and laying flowers at the Eternal Flame.

The organizing committee of the international event comprises leaders and representatives from veteran and public organizations, Heroes of the Soviet Union and of Russia, WWII veterans, and government officials.
