18 May 2011, 13:30EU must ban entry for Russian homophobes - gay community
Moscow, May 18, Interfax - The Russian gay community is set to ask various countries' authorities to ban entry for Russian representatives who have homophobic views, gay community leader Nikolay Alexeyev said.
"Today - on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia - the GayRussia.ru website along with the Article 282 public organization unveiled a vast archive of Russian homophobia that includes the names of politicians, public figures, organizations, parties, officials and judges who have been involved in homophobic actions in recent years," Alexeyev told Interfax.
Very soon the lists will be sent to the "authorities of the EU and developed democracies so that they consider whether visas should be issued to people who openly call for hatred towards sexual minorities and do not share the underlying values of a free democratic society," he said.
"The lists contain the names of 487 politicians, officials and public figures, 100 judges, 19 government agencies, 40 parties, movements and organizations," Alexeyev said.
Statements and actions by Russian politicians and officials, addressed to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people have been regularly monitored by gay activists since 2005.
