St. Petersburg gays win lawsuit

St. Petersburg, October 19, Interfax - The St. Petersburg Petrograd District Court has upheld the rulings issued by the Central and Moskovsky District Courts, which invalidated the district administration's decision to ban a gay picket in the city in summer-2010.

"The court has granted the lawsuit and invalidated the administration's actions," Maria Yefremenkova, head of the organizational committee of the St. Petersburg gay pride parade, told Interfax.

Yefremenkova said the court has ordered the Petrograd District administration to give the picketers a new place and approve a time for the picket.

"Our purpose now is to file a notification and insist that the picket be held," Yefremenkova said.

At the same time, the city's gay and lesbian community plans to hold a rally in defense of the rights of sexual minorities in the Moskovsky district in early November, she said.

"We will file an application with the administration 15 days in advance," she said.

According to earlier reports, the St. Petersburg Petrograd District Court on October 11 partially granted the complaint filed by the sexual minorities contesting the ban on the gay pride parade. The court then ordered the Moskovsky District administration to give gay activists a location and determine a time for the gay picket.

The St. Petersburg authorities previously repeatedly declined organizers' requests for permission to hold marches and rallies in defense of the rights of sexual minorities on June 26. Despite that, St. Petersburg gay activists tried to hold an unsanctioned rally in the city's Dvortsovaya Square that day, but were detained by police.
