Alexy II warns against making Kosovo independent

Moscow, November 15, Interfax - Moscow and All Russian Patriarch Alexy II said on Thursday that giving Kosovo the status of an independent region would lead to all orthodox Christian churches in the region being abandoned.

"The region's sacred places will be abandoned if the region becomes independent," Alexy II said at his meeting with Serb President Boris Tadic in the Svyato-Danilov monastery.

"We know that Kosovo is a sacred land for the Serbs. There are many sacred orthodox sites in Kosovo," Alexy II said. Many of these ancient temples have been razed, he said.

"If Kosovo is granted independence, who will protect these sacred sites," Alexy II said.
