13 June 2007, 10:52Orthodox groups to patrol homosexuals' meeting venue in Moscow
Moscow, June 13, Interfax - More than 50 members of Orthodox patriotic organizations gathered near the Plevna Monument in downtown Moscow on Tuesday to say a prayer, giving a start to a campaign to patrol the city's Ilyinsky Park, a traditional meeting venue for homosexuals.
"People can be seen there very frequently who boldly demonstrate their non-traditional orientation, persuading everyone that it is normal. We believe that it is a vice and want to remove all this from this site which is sacred for the Russians," Diana Romanovskaya, spokeswoman for the Georgiyevtsy! youth movement, which helped organize the campaign, told Interfax ahead of the prayer.
Representatives of 15 organizations will patrol the park from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. If the organizations' members come across homosexuals, they will ask them to leave the park.
"We are not going to persuade them by force. But we hope that the very presence of our patrol will prompt homosexuals to look for other meeting venues," Romanovskaya said.
