15 August 2006, 10:13Attack on gay parade in Estonia prompts criminal case
Tallinn, August 15, Interfax - The prosecutor's office of the northern district of Estonia has ordered the police to look into an attack on participants of a gay parade that took place in Tallinn on Saturday.
Initially, a case was opened into "violation of public order," the prosecutor's office told Interfax.
"However, more information on the incidents was received. Calls for violence and bodily harm, as well as discriminatory statements, were heard directed at the parade participants," the prosecutor's office said.
Thus, according to the police information, stones, eggs and other objects were thrown at participants of the parade. One of the participants, a Spanish citizen, sustained a concussion.
About 500 gays from the Baltic States, Finland and elsewhere participated in the Tallinn Pride 2006 gay parade on Saturday. Many of the marchers came from Latvia, where the authorities had refused to allow a gay parade.
It was the third time Estonia has hosted a gay parade and it was dedicated to protecting gay families. The first parade was held in Estonia in 2004.
