Patriarch Kirill describes 'abolition' of Russian culture in West as insane

Moscow, May 17, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia describes attempts by Western countries to "abolish" Russian culture as shameful.

"The so-called abolition of Russian culture in the West has become evidence of the deplorable moral state of society. The attempt to eradicate the culture of a nation is the apogee of hatred. Only attempting to physically exterminate a nation that has become undesirable is worse," the patriarch said from the rostrum of the 10th Parliamentary Meetings in the Federation Council on Tuesday.

Russian society felt bonds with European culture even during the hard times of the Cold War and the struggle of ideologies, the primate said. "Western classical literature, music, and pictorial art have always been highly valued by our compatriots, who perceive European culture as an integral part of the rich Christian civilizational heritage. This is how we continue to perceive it today despite everything that is happening," Patriarch Kirill said.

He expressed hope that "those who are now 'fighting' against Pushkin and Dostoyevsky, boycotting the Tchaikovsky contests and refusing to perform Rachmaninoff will sooner or later come to realize the shamefulness and insanity of their actions."
