Patriarch Kirill can't be scared with sanctions - Russian Orthodox Church

Moscow, May 4, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church is skeptical about the European Commission's plans to impose sanctions on Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, its spokesperson said.

"I would also remind the authors of the sanction initiatives that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia comes from a family whose members were repressed for decades for their faith and moral position in times of militant communist godlessness. And none of them feared imprisonment and even execution. And therefore, you have to be absolutely unfamiliar with our Church's history to try to scare its clerics and flock by putting them on some lists," Russian Orthodox Church spokesperson Vladimir Legoyda said on Telegram.

Earlier on Wednesday, European media outlets reported that the European Commission proposed restrictions against Patriarch Kirill as part of the sixth package of sanctions on Russia.

In commenting on these plans, Legoyda said, "The more indiscriminate the sanctions are, the more detached they are from common sense and the more remote is peace, for which the Russian Orthodox Church has been praying at the Holy Patriarch's blessing during each liturgy, upholding its words by assistance to all those who suffered from the Ukrainian conflict."
