17 February 2022, 13:14Novices from Africa are to join Russian monasteries
Moscow, February 17, Interfax – Some of the parishioners of African communities that have recently moved to the Russian Orthodox Church wish to work in Russian monasteries in order to set up future monastic communities in their countries, Patriarchal Exarch of Africa Metropolitan Leonid said.
"Monastic communities have good prospects, several people have already wished to work and live in our monasteries. We want and will strive to make young people come to our monasteries, to get acquainted with our monastic traditions and rules under our control," the hierarch said at an online lecture.
According to the metropolitan, several years after gaining experience in Russia, novices will come back home to revive monastic life there.
As reported, more than a hundred clerics of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, who don't agree with the creation of non-canonical "Orthodox Church of Ukraine" (OCU), declared their desire to move together with the flock to the Moscow Patriarchate. At the end of December, 2021, they were admitted to the Russian Orthodox Church, whose Synod established its exarchate in Africa, which caused indignation on the part of the Greek bishops who recognized the OCU. Now there are more than 150 clerics transferred to Russian Church from more than 12 countries. |
