31 January 2022, 10:15Russian Church Synod urges Patriarch of Alexandria to renounce support for schism in Ukraine
Moscow, January 31, Interfax - The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has assured the Patriarchate of Alexandria that admitting African clerics to the Russian Orthodox Church should not be viewed as an incursion into its canonical territory but solely as the desire to protect canonical Orthodoxy in Africa.
Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria in November 2019 recognized the non-canonical Orthodox Church of Ukraine set up by the patriarch of Constantinople a year before. Numerous clerics of the Church of Alexandria, whose canonical territory is Africa, disagreed with that and wished to reunite with the Moscow Patriarchate. Their request was granted at the end of December 2021, as the Holy Synod in Moscow admitted 102 clerics from eight African countries to the Russian Orthodox Church.
At present, 150 African clerics from 12 countries have already joined the Russian Orthodox Church.
"Such difficult decision, taken in the situation when the Patriarch of Alexandria recognized the Ukrainian schismatics, is by no means a sign of claims to the canonical territory of the ancient Church of Alexandria. It pursues one goal only - to give canonical protection to those Orthodox clerics in Africa who do not wish to be involved in the unlawful legitimization of the schism," the Holy Synod said in a statement published on the Russian Orthodox Church website on Friday.
At the same time, the Holy Synod called on the patriarch of Alexandria and the bishops of his church "to renounce their support for the Ukrainian schism and return to the canonical path in order to preserve the unity of the Holy Orthodoxy."
The Holy Synod's statement was made in response to a communique by the Alexandrian Synod, which denounced the establishment by the Russian Orthodox Church of the Exarchate of Africa for clerics and worshippers disagreeing with the recognition of the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine. |
