27 January 2021, 20:48Leader of Russia's Jewish community warns against erasing memory of Holocaust
Moscow, January 27, Interfax - On the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia Alexander Boroda called on the international community not to forget the lessons of WWII and not to try to rewrite the history of that war.
"It is impossible to watch indifferently how easily history is rewritten, to observe attempts to bury in oblivion the sacred feat of the Soviet army and the Soviet people [...] On behalf of the Jewish community, I call on the international community, which so reverently relates to the institution of childhood and upbringing, to strengthen and approve the study of the lessons of true history, in which each hero has his own real name, and concepts do not replace each other," Boroda said at a ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Moscow on Wednesday.
Only in this way, preserving the truth and not succumbing to the immediate demands of the current conjuncture, will it be possible to establish peace and warn humanity against making new irreparable mistakes, he said.
In turn, Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar read a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and told those who gathered at the ceremony about the importance of stopping such crimes at the level of thoughts. "Perhaps someone will tell us that ideology is only words and thoughts. However, it was the tragedy of the Holocaust that showed us that there is one step from words and thoughts to genocide; the line is very thin. If we do not want a repetition of the tragedy, some words and thoughts should be outlawed in a civilized world," Lazar said. |
