01 December 2020, 13:59Armenian opposition member ends hunger strike after visit of catholicos
Yerevan, December 1, Interfax - Gegam Manukyan, a member of the Armenian opposition party Dashnaktsutyun and news service director of the Yerkir Media television channel, has stopped the hunger strike he started on November 23 to demand the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
"Catholicos of all Armenians Karekin II visited us today. He called for stropping the hunger strike because there are other methods of fighting. There had been plenty of such calls in recent days, but we continued our campaign. However, it was hard to deny His Holiness' request. My comrades and I stop the hunger strike today, and continue to fight," Manukyan said on Facebook.
Former judge of the Armenian Constitutional Court Kim Balayan stopped his hunger strike earlier.
Armenian opposition parties have held protests in Yerevan demanding Pashinyan's resignation since November 10, after the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia adopted a trilateral statement on a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, the deployment of peacekeepers there, and the transfer of a number of areas in the region previously controlled by Armenian forces to Azerbaijan. |
