Hegumeness of Sredneuralsky Convent calls on followers of schismatic schema-monk Sergy to come to their senses
Moscow, August 3, Interfax - Hegumeness Varvara (Krygina), mother superior of the Sredneuralsky Convent, who left it after the convent was taken over by schema-monk Sergy (Romanov), has issued an address admonishing his penitents.
"Some sisters are saying they are ready to go to hell with Father Segy and that it is a deadly sin to disobey your confessor, which is forgiven neither in this life, nor in the future life. That's wrong," the hegumeness said in her address, which was posted on the website of the Yekaterinburg Diocese on Monday.
Disobedience to a confessor is only possible when he himself obeys his superiors and the Church, she said.
The hegumeness said she and some other nuns and penitents of Father Sergy had tried to tell him his actions were wrong even before their departure, but the priest was not ready to accept criticism and quickly put a stop to such talk.
Hegumeness Varvara said Father Sergy had been her confessor for all 18 years of her time at the convent, until he chose a schismatic path.
"In the past 1.5-2 years, my soul was increasingly troubled by what I saw. Father Sergiy called for repentance less and less frequently in his sermons. The spirit of peace, love, the spirit of meekness, was increasingly substituted with political slogans, exposure of all possible mistakes and imbalances, both in the Church and in the state," the hegumeness said.
As an example, she mentioned the situation that happened on June 7, 2020, on Trinity Day. "Instead of praying to God and glorifying the Holy Trinity, a rally was practically organized at the convent, with calls for creating a militia. The words of the song 'Arise, Vast Country!' were heard," the hegumeness said.
She said that situation was the last straw that made her and some of the sisters revise their attitude toward their former confessor.
As reported earlier, a public sermon in which Father Sergy dismissed the Covid-19 pandemic as a myth and called for disobedience to senior clergy and the authorities drew outcry on social networks and in the media. Father Sergy also cursed those who temporarily closed churches during the pandemic and warned of the creation of "Satan's electronic camp."
In a video released earlier, Father Sergy called the coronavirus pandemic a myth and called on people to disobey church and secular authorities. Father Sergy also cursed those who temporarily closed churches during the pandemic and warned of the creation of "Satan's electronic camp."
On June 3, the court of the Yekaterinburg Diocese found Father Sergy guilty of breaching his monastic vows and his priest's oath and defrocked him. Despite this, Romanov refused to leave the convent. He called on Patriarch Kirill to step down.
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia approved the decision of the diocesan court to defrock Romanov on July 24.
