13 November 2019, 18:28Cathedral mosque to open in Crimea in summer 2020
Simferopol, November 13, Interfax - A cathedral mosque in Simferopol, which will become the main one on the Crimean Peninsula, is expected to open in summer 2020, Albert Kangiyev, the head of the Crimean State Committee on Ethnic Relations, said.
"It is a unique and grandiose construction project on the territory of Crimea [...] We have never had projects to build religious buildings of such scale. A unique architectural solution, up to 4,000 people will be able to pray simultaneously. As to the commissioning date, we expect it to be tentatively June 21 [2020]," Kangiyev said on Crimea radio on Wednesday.
According to earlier reports, the Cathedral Mosque is located on a territory of over three hectares. The religious complex comprises three buildings and an infrastructure. The mosque will be some 35 meters high and its minarets will be over 50 meters high.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with the public in Simferopol in March 2019 he had invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the opening ceremony of the mosque in Crimea.
Earlier reports stated that the mosque might open in spring 2019, and later reports said it would happen in spring 2020. |
