23 May 2019, 12:20Man arrested at protest against new cathedral in Yekaterinburg goes to ECHR
Yekaterinburg, May 23, Interfax - A man who took part in a protest against the construction of St. Catherine's Cathedral in the park near Yekaterinburg's Drama Theater has complained to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over his detention and arrest, the man's lawyer Alexey Bushmakov told Interfax.
"I have visited him in the detention facility and we have drawn up a complaint and sent it to the ECHR. In this complaint, we list violations committed by the authorities when they detained people for an absolutely peaceful protest. The case is based solely on statements of policemen who compiled reports. And rulings on arrests started to be executed immediately, thus tying the judges' hands," Bushmakov said.
Unauthorized protests against the construction of the church in the park on Oktyabrskaya Square in downtown Yekaterinburg began on May 13 after the potential construction site was fenced off. Protesters tore down the fence, leading to dozens of arrests.
Ninety-six people have been detained since the protests began. Of them, 33 people have been sentenced to jail terms between two and 15 days. Nine of them have appealed their arrest.
The authorities plan to complete the construction of St. Catherine's Cathedral in 2023, in time for the 300th anniversary of the founding of Yekaterinburg.
