31 January 2019, 12:43Russians, Ukrainians to stay united despite current differences between Moscow, Kiev - Patriarch Kirill
Moscow, January 31, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said he hopes that the current tensions in the relations between Ukraine and Russia will not break the unity of the peoples of the two countries.
"We all belong to one civilization: we have civilizational community, we have cultural community, we have religious community. And it seems to me that this community, which follows from history, from culture, from religion, is much stronger than political conditions, which come and go," the patriarch told reporters in Moscow.
He referred to historical examples of serious conflicts occurring within one community, including the war between the UK and the United States in the early 19th century. "Did the English-language cultural community fall apart? Nothing of the sort! They came through that crisis, and generally through the war between England and the United States, and they now their cultural and language community is being maintained," the patriarch said.
He also mentioned the Peloponnesian Wars, in spite of which the Greek cultural and spiritual community maintained its ethnos and internal unity.
"Therefore, it is perfectly obvious to me that the spiritual, cultural, and civilizational unity of Russians and Ukrainians is much stronger than temporary political schemes and models, which work to destroy this unity. It won't work!" Patriarch Kirill said. |
