Chief rabbi of Russia calls Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital the restoration of justice
Moscow, December 7, Interfax - Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar welcomes U.S. President Donald Trump's speech where he recognized Jerusalem the capital of Israel.
"Donald Trump's speech is restoration of justice," Lazar told the journalists.
According to him, all the time when there have been existed countries with Jewish population in the region, Jerusalem was their capital. When there were no such states, Jerusalem remained religious center of all Jews.
Every year the passover seder and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) finishes with the phrase: "next year in Jerusalem," Lazar reminded. He also said that the greatest shrine of Judaism - the Western Wall or the Wailing Wall is located in Jerusalem and Jews from all the world have come here for hundreds of years.
He believes "this decision is a recognition, though a little bit belated, of historical reality: Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel not for a year or two, and even not for ten years, but in fact, from the foundation of the state."
The chief rabbi of Russia does not agree that this decision of the USA will provoke large-scale conflict in the region.
He reminded that not long ago Russian Foreign Ministry made a statement where it recognized West Jerusalem the capital of Israel. "This decision did not cause any storm or scandal, it won't cause it today, if it is not blown up artificially," Lazar said.
