08 June 2015, 10:17Gay pride parade in Kiev lasts less than half hour
Kiev, June 8, Interfax - A so-called Equality March organized on Obolonskaya Quay in Kiev by the LGBT community lasted less than half an hour on Saturday.
An Interfax correspondent reported from the scene that the organizers warned the participants that they should disperse in small groups and not take the subway. Police are watching the marchers dispersing and have been basically able to ensure their security.
An Equality March was held in Kiev for the first time in 2013, and the local authorities and police were able to protect its participants at the time.
According to the city police authority, nine police officers were injured in clashes during the march. One of them was in a severe condition with a neck injury. Police arrested 25 people for hurling explosives at the marchers over a police cordon. Fireworks, screwdrivers, knives and other potentially dangerous items were seized from them.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian LGBT community, Svyatoslav Sheremet, told Interfax that he possessed confirmed information that four marchers had been injured.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko demanded punishment for young radicals who had attacked a march.
"I believe that political forces that protested the march fanned up the situation by trying to earn dubious PR points on the minority rights theme," the mayor's office quoted Klitschko as telling reporters.
Klitschko mentioned that several days before the "Equality March" he had urged anti-LGBT groups "not to fan hostility and not to create a standoff in the capital over the march."
