Kostroma administration bans gay pride parade, six other LGBT events

Yaroslavl, April 9, Interfax - The administration of Kostroma has denied Moscow gay activists authorization of a gay pride parade and six other LGBT events,GayRussia.ru reported on Thursday.

The decision was made on the basis of the federal law banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors and the possibility of breaches of the rights of pedestrians in the locations proposed as venues for the events.

In the meantime, the organizers intend to contest the denials in courts and go as far as the European Court of Human Rights, if need be, the report says.

Interfax currently has no comments on this matter from Kostroma administration officials.

Sexual minorities planned to hold a gay pride parade, two rallies and four pickets in Kostroma in the period between April 13 and April 20. The events were expected to address tolerance and observance of the rights and freedoms of gay people in Russia, legalization of same-sex marriages, and imposing a ban on gender discrimination in the Russian legislation. The activists also planned to speak against executions of homosexuals by ISIS militants in the Middle East.

In April 2014, LGBT activists tried to hold a parade and two rallies in Kostroma, but the requests for their authorization were declined by the city authorities. The court ruled that the Kostroma administration had banned the LGBT events due to force majeure circumstances.
