20 May 2013, 10:05Anti-homophobia demo held in Kiev
Kiev, May 20, Interfax - About 15 people held a demonstration in Kiev on Saturday marking the International Day Against Homophobia, an event held across the globe on May 17.
The demonstrators were holding large balloons and banners with slogans some of which read, "Modern civilized values for Ukraine," "LGBT for families and mutual support," "Does the Earth rest on three whales? Is Homosexuality a disease?" and "Ukraine isn't Russia. Why repeat the follies of our eastern neighbor?"
The 20-minute demonstration, held on the Ukrainian capital's central avenue, Khreshchatyk, involved no major excesses. However, just before it, police pushed off young outsiders who were holding provocative banners and tried to join the demonstrators, and during the event occasional insulting outcries were hurled at the demonstrators from a small crowd standing nearby.
The site of the demonstration was tightly cordoned off by police.
At the end of the event, the demonstrators sent their balloons flying up before going away in a minibus.
